Indonesia eases the ban on live cattle imports from Australia

Over the years, Indonesia has emerged as the biggest market for Australia's live cattle exports. As per Indonesia import export data reports, around 303k live cattles were imported from Australia last year. Whereas, this year, the live cattle export shipment crossed over 155K. Indonesia customs data shows that the country's cattle imports totaled to be $564 million in FY 2022. During this period, Australia was the only country responsible for over live cattle exports to Indonesia. 

These include beef, cluding calves, buffalo and purebred breeding. Beef was the most imported live cattle imported by Indonesia from Australia with worth over $362 million responsible for over 70% share in the Indonesian imports. Whereas, cladding calves imports were totaled to be $148 million along with 28% share. Whereas, there is some significant rise in the demand for buffalo and purebred breeding in the Indonesian market.


Australian Rural Exports is the top Australian live cattle export company contributing to over 12% share in Australia's live cattle imports. Whereas, other leading cattle export companies were Livestock shipping, Frontier international northern, International livestock export, Halleen Australasian livestock traders are some of the other major export companies from Australia having some valuable amount of share in the Indonesian market.


Earlier, Indonesia has imposed a ban on live cattle imports from Australia. It was due to LSD infected cattle breeds of Australia. This condition causes blisters and limits the milk production. So, the ban was imposed by Indonesia in order to not risk humans. 


Australia has emerged as an important trading partner of Indonesia in recent years. According to the Indonesia import data reports, around $7 billion worth of goods were imported during the fiscal year 2022. Indonesia's Key imports are mainly minerals and cereals. Whereas, export valuewise wheat, coal, crude petroleum, bovine meat, gold, cotton and sugar are other major exports from Indonesia. 


Wheat was responsible for the maximum amount of export shipments to Australia having over 17% share in Indonesia's overall imports. Whereas, coal and iron ore accounted for 17% and 5% respectively. On the other hand, Australia had imports from Indonesia near $4 billion during the fiscal year 2022. 


As per Indonesia export data reports, Electric equipment were the most imported goods by Australia with exports worth over $435 million. After Electronic equipment, machinery and nuclear reactors were the second most imported goods by Australia with imports around $318 million. Whereas, other major products imported by Australia were mineral fuels, fertilizers, wood articles, footwear, paper, apparel, furniture and tobacco.
