Botswana's Tobacco Import Landscape in 2024: A Statistical Overview

  In 2024, Botswana's tobacco import data shows interesting changes due to various economic and social factors. The latest data from the Botswana Bureau of Statistics reveals that in 2023, the country imported about 1,500 metric tons of tobacco, which is a 10% increase from the previous year. This rise is mainly because more people in Botswana, especially the younger generation, are choosing imported tobacco brands over local ones. At the same time, the government is tightening rules around tobacco imports to promote better health and reduce smoking rates.   The Botswana government is likely to put more emphasis on reducing imports in order to restrict its imports. Botswana has restricted its fresh fruits and vegetables from South Africa till 2025. This decision is taken in the wake of reforming its agricultural sectoz  1`r and forbidding the reliance on imports.  This might impact Botswana's trade relations with South Africa. South Africa is a significant supplier of fresh produce to Botswana. This will create heavy loss to South African farmers. UAE has emerged as the top destination for Botswana's exports

  Botswana's economy relies mostly on diamonds and metals exports. Botswana export data shows that diamonds cover over 88% of the country's overall exports whereas the rest of the exports were mostly from metals and dairy products. Botswana’s exports found ground in the Asian market as it was responsible for 60% of Botswana's overall exports. Among Asian countries, the UAE and India were among the top  destinations for Botswana’s exports. Botswana import export data reflects that the UAE was responsible for over 30% and India was 12% share. Diamonds were the major imports made by the UAE from Botswana accounting for over 90% share and the rest were scrap waste, precious stones, metals, nuclear reactors, meat products.   Cattle farming is the major practice in Botswana. Botswana's majority of the population rely on cattle farming for their living. According to the Botswana import export data reports, around 80 million dollars worth live animals and animal products were exported during the fiscal year 2021.  Botswana's exports of live animals and animal products increased by significant value. As per Botswana customs data of 2020, the country's animal exports were around 40 million dollars. South Africa has emerged as the major trading partner of  Botswana in terms of livestock exports.
