 Cattle farming is the major practice in Botswana. Botswana's majority of the population rely on cattle farming for their living. According to the Botswana import export data reports, around 80 million dollars worth live animals and animal products were exported during the fiscal year 2021.

Besides South Africa, other major importers of Botswana's livestock were respectively Central Asian countries, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Italy, Greece, Congo, Malta, Angola, North America, etc.


By 2026, Botswana's total livestock production is expected to decrease by 7.5%. Keeping in mind the global import export data records, Botswana's livestock production is likely to decline by 648,482 heads in 2021 to 409,300 heads in 2026. In terms of livestock production, Botswana is placed 129th in the list along with Brazil, India and the United States.


According to Botswana import data reports, Botswana's livestock imports were estimated around 6,055K dollars in 2021. Further, experts predict that around 0.8% growth in Botswana's livestock imports. It could reach up to 6.2 million dollars by 2026. As the demand is continuously growing.


Botswana's most favoured destinations for live animal imports were South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, Brazil and Zimbabwe. Brazil contributes to around 11% of Botswana’s total livestock imports.


Botswana had suspended livestock exports to major partners due to disease affected animals such as cattle, sheep, cloven hoofed animals, etc. After the viral outbreak, Botswana had resumed its cattle exports to South Africa, Namibia, and other European countries. Botswana is also the top beef exporter among the African countries. As per Botswana export data, around 9000 tonnes of beef was exported to Europe.


Recently, Botswana has imported over 141 bulls and 21 heifers from the United States . The government has taken this step in order to support its Revised Artificial Insemination Programme. Through this programme, Botswana is looking to produce quality animals through insemination. Botswana's cattle growth is expected to reach 2.5 million through this programme.
