Sri Lanka likely to import Ethanol from India

 
Sri Lanka is likely to import ethanol from India. Sri Lanka has shown immense interest in importing mixed petrol and diesel from India to support its domestic market. Sri Lanka import export data shows that Sri Lanka was the 7th leading importer of ethanol from India having over $803 dollars worth of imports. 

Whereas, during FY 2021, the ethanol imports of Sri Lanka from India were estimated to be around $1624. Now, Sri Lanka has shown immense interest in buying ethanol from India.Over the years, Sri Lanka ethanol imports have declined significantly. In FY 2022, the ethanol imports by Sri Lanka fell to 92%. The imports were high during 2017 but afterwards ethanol imports of Sri Lanka have declined consecutively.


Sri Lanka import data shows that  France, UK and Pakistan were the top ethanol sources to Sri Lanka. Together these contributed to over 90% of Sri Lanka’s overall ethanol imports. In the past year, France was responsible for over 14% increase in ethanol exports to Sri Lanka. France had over 70% share in Sri Lanka’s ethanol imports. 


Whereas, Pakistan's ethanol exports share was around 12% followed by Switzerland 13%. During the fiscal year 2022, Sri Lanka’s ethanol imports totaled to be $28 million. Apart from France, UK, Pakistan, Italy, Sweden, India, Ireland, Mexico, Russia and United Arab Emirates were other major ethanol exporters to Sri Lanka.


On the other hand, Sri Lanka's ethanol exports declined by 80% during the last fiscal year. Sri Lanka export data shows that the exports were mostly to Maldives, Australia and India. The exports to Maldives increased by 3%. Also, there was some noticeable amount of ethanol exports to the United States. Whereas, other major exporters were the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Netherlands, Korea, and Denmark.


In the past fiscal year, Sri Lanka's fuel imports were over 2.5 billion dollars. These were mostly from India, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia. South Korea, Indonesia, Oman and Thailand are other significant fuel exporters to Sri Lanka. On the other hand, Sri Lanka made few fuel exports to India, Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates. Although the fuel imports of Sri Lanka declined due to depleting financial reserves. But now it has signed a pact with 3 countries to sustain its fuel imports needs.
