India Has Become The World's Largest Scotch Whisky Importer Replacing France

Over the past few decades, the demand for scotch whisky in India grew by 200%. As per the latest Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) reports, India has become the world's largest scotch whisky importer replacing France.

According to India import export data 2022, there was around 60% rise in scotch whisky imports. India holds 2% share of the world's total whisky market. Due to the UK-India free trade deal, India is exempted from the 150% tariff on the imports of Scotch whisky to India.

As per India customs data, India imports shipments were around 219 million in 2022. On the other hand, France imported over 205 million bottles in 2022. Thus, India has become the largest importer of scotch whisky in the world. Royal Salute, Ballantine, Imperial Blue, Antiquity, Chivas Regal, Johnnie Walker, and Black label were the popular scotch whisky brands imported by India.

World’s largest Scotch whisky importing countries

According to our historical data reports, France was the leading importer of scotch whisky in 2021 with imports worth 173 million US Dollars. France was followed by India, the United States, Brazil, Japan, Spain, Mexico, Germany, Poland, and Russia.

As per our European countries import export data reports, France imported over 171 bottles in 2021. There was around 1% increase as compared to the previous year.

Another major scotch whisky importer was India. For the fiscal year 2021, India scotch whisky imports saw a record growth of 44% as compared to 2020. According to the India import data of scotch whisky, India's total imports worth was around 132 million US Dollars in 2021.

Brazil import data suggests that its total scotch whisky imports will be worth 80 million US Dollars in 2021.

Japan was the world's fifth largest scotch whisky importer. According to the Asian countries import export data, Japan scotch whisky imports were around 53 million US Dollars in 2021.

Other major scotch whisky exporters are France, Singapore, Taiwan, India, China, Panama, Germany, Japan and Spain.

France holds the second place in terms of scotch whisky exports accounting for 588 million US Dollars in 2022 that was around 25% more as compared to 460 million US Dollars in 2021.

Singapore was the 3rd largest scotch whisky exporter in the world with over 50% rise in exports, that was around 378 million US Dollars.

Taiwan scotch whisky exports rose to 39% in the fiscal year 2022 with exports worth 375 million US Dollars.

On the Other hand, India was the fifth largest exporter of Scotch whisky in 2022 with over 90% rise. As per India export data of Scotch whisky, the total exports worth 172 million US Dollars in 2022.

Also, India shares a strong trade relationship with the UK that led to rise in scotch whisky exports from India.
