 India is the world's second largest sugar exporter after Brazil. According to the India import export data of Sugar, India's total sugar production hit 36 million tonnes during the financial year 2023. While it was relatively low, as India's sugar production output was around 37 million tonnes in 2021. 

In terms of import value, India's sugar exports hit a record 5.7 billion dollars in the fiscal year 2022. While as per India customs data records of 2021, the total sugar exports stood at 4.5 billion dollars.


India export data suggests that the maximum sugar shipments were made to Somalia (1.70 lakh tonnes) in FY 2022. Other major sugar importers from India were UAE, China, Djibouti, Sudan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. India did a considerable amount to its neighbours including China and Sri Lanka by 1.45 lakh tonnes & 82K tonnes respectively. 


On the other hand, as per India import data of sugar indicates that around 150 million dollars of sugar imports recorded in the financial year 2022. The top sugar import destinations for sugar imports were Brazil, Germany, United Arab Emirates, France and New Zealand. The Indian government is planning to expand its sugar exports. If the domestic sugar production meets global demand, then India is likely to export 1 million extra sugar.

Brazil

Brazil is the leading sugar producer and exporter in the world. For the financial year 2022, Brazil's sugar production was around 28 MMT. Whereas in 2021, it was 25 million metric tons.


According to the Brazil export data, the country's total sugar exports accounted for over 10 billion dollars in 2022. India, China, Algeria, Bangladesh and Indonesia are the top 5 importers of Brazilian sugar.


Thailand

Thailand is the third largest sugar exporting country in the world. Thailand's raw sugar exports were around 1.8 billion dollars in 2022. As per Thailand export data, the top export destinations were Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, South Korea and Taiwan. On the other hand, Thailand import data indicates that the major sugar exporting sugar countries to Thailand were India, Pakistan, Taiwan, UAE and Guatemala.


Germany

Germany is the world's fourth largest sugar exporter. As per the import export data reports of the global market, Germany's total sugar exports were around 1.5 billion dollars in the fiscal year 2022. The major markets for Germany's sugar exports were the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Austria, Poland and Belgium.


France

France was the fifth largest sugar exporter in 2022. For the financial year 2022, France sugar exports were around 876 million dollars. The top destinations for France sugar exports were Germany, Spain, Belgium, Italy and the United Kingdom.


Mexico

Mexico is the 6th largest sugar exporter in the world. According to the Mexico export data, the total sugar exports were around 900 million dollars in 2022. The United States, Dominican Republic, Canada, Australia and Puerto Rico were the top 5 destinations for Mexico's sugar exports. The United States contributes to over 90% of the sugar imports from Mexico.
