China's imports of pet food from USA increased by 200%

 During the fiscal year 2022, China's imports of pet food had seen tremendous growth. This is mainly due to the rise in the pet population of China. It rose to 750 million from 558 million during 2022. China’s pet population has been increasing at the rate of 8% as its food imports.

According to the China import export data, the pet food imports were estimated around 1 billion dollars in FY 22. Whereas, in 2016, the pet food imports were merely 100 million dollars by China. China's pet food sector has seen an overall growth of 45%. These were mostly dog and cat foods.

As per China customs data reports, the top pet food importing companies from China are Acana, K9 Natural, Taste of the Wild, Vital Essentials, Royal Canin and Stella & Chew's. Our China import data suggests that the United States, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Poland, Russia and Romania are the leading exporters of pet food to China.

The United States was the leading exporter of pet foods to China. Last year’s China trade statistics reflected that the pet food exports from the USA to China grew by 200%. Historical China trade data suggests that New Zealand's leading pet food company sold over 100 million dollars worth of pet food to China during FY 22. Whereas, Canada's Champion Pet Foods was another lucrative pet food brand with valuable exports to China.

For the fiscal year 2021, China's 80% pet food import share was held by Canada, United States and New Zealand. In terms of pet food exports, Canada accounted for over 1.8 yuan millions worth exports of pet food to China.

On the other hand, according to the pet food China export data reports, the exports were valued around 1.25 billion dollars during the financial year 2022. In 2020, it was around 982 million dollars. The United States was the largest importer of Chinese pet food worth around 304 million dollars.

Experts predict that China's pet food industry could become a 16 billion dollar market by 2025. Currently, the top pet food exporters are European Union countries, United States, China and Thailand.  Whereas, China’s live animals imports accounted for over 893 million dollars during FY 2022.
