Russia, "the world's largest wheat exporter"

Russia the world's largest wheat exporter

Russia is the world's biggest wheat importer. Russia contributes around 14% of the global wheat exports. Whereas, the United States, Canada, Australia, Ukraine and France are other leading wheat exporters after Russia.

As per Russia Trade Data, the country's total wheat exports were 15% more as compared to the fiscal year 2021. In 2021, Russia's wheat exports were estimated at around 8.8 billion dollars.

Whereas, these figures have changed to 13 billion dollars in 2022. In the earlier months, these wheat exports had declined due to the Ukraine invasion. Later from July to December 2022, Russia's wheat exports gained momentum.

During last year, it crossed 47 million metric tonnes. Our Russia export data reflects that Egypt, Turkey, Nigeria, Azerbaijan and Suadi Arabia were the major buyers of Russian wheat.

Turkey was the top destination for Russian wheat imports with over 4.7 million tonnes. Although the imports declined by 15%. Similarly, shipments to Iran have also declined by 30% and remained 3.5 million tonnes. Also, the wheat exports to Egypt also increased by 13%. One of the major reasons behind Russia's booming wheat exports is the cheap price. The demand for Russian wheat had grown in Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and Brazil. Algeria has imported over 1 million tonnes of Russian wheat during FY 2022. Now due to restrictions imposed by the USA, Russia is restricting its wheat exports that could result in price hike and global supply chain disruption.

Sales to Saudi Arabia had doubled and reached a volume of 6,34,000 million metric tonnes during 2022. Also, the imports to Brazil were estimated around 333000 tonnes during 2022. It was 10 times more than the previous year.

Wheat accounts for over 78% of Russia's total grain exports. For fiscal year 2022, Russia's cereals exports were estimated around 53 million metric tons. It was 13 MMT more than the previous year's exports. In terms of imports, Russia did over 80 million dollars worth of wheat imports during the fiscal year 2022. The latest Russia customs data suggests that Russia's wheat exports were up by 49% during June 2023. It is estimated around 44 million metric tonnes. Russia and Ukraine are both the top producers and exporters of wheat globally. Due to the ongoing war between these two, the supply of wheat and grains has been affected.
