Turkey's plastics exports to Tajikistan sees rapid growth

 Plastics were among top commodities exported by Turkey during the financial year 2022. It is the 6th most exported product from Turkey. According to Turkey customs data, the exports of plastics and its products were estimated around 12 billion dollars during FY 22. The top destinations for plastics exports from Turkey were Germany, Iraq, United Kingdom, United States and Italy. These mainly include plates, films, sheets, plastic furniture, fabrics, containers, bags, footwear, table, kitchenware, machiners, packaging, etc.


Tajikistan has emerged as the significant buyer of plastics from Turkey. According to the Turkey export data, around 27 million dollars worth of plastics were exported during the fiscal year 2022. These include tubes, sheets, strips, polyester, amino resins, bathroom, kitchenware etc.


Whereas the latest Turkey trade data of April 2023, Tajikistan plastics and plastics articles exports increased by 80% as compared to April FY 2022. In April 2022, Turkey plastics exports to Tajikistan were around 1.7 million dollars while in April 2023, it reached 3 million dollars.


Whereas other major exports from Turkey to Tajikistan were toiletries, jewellery, transformers. Turkey's total exports to Tajikistan were around 388 million dollars during 2022. On the other hand, our import export data reports reflect that Tajikistan exported 248 worth goods to Turkey last year. These were mostly yarn, cotton, aluminium, etc.


In terms of imports, Turkey did record imports of plastics or rubber during fiscal year 2022. As per Turkey import data, the plastics or rubber imports reached 5.6 million tons. Over the years, there was a significant increase in imports of polymers by Turkey. The major importers were food production and packaging industries.


Our Turkey import export data suggest that the majority of plastics imports by Turkey comes from Saudi Arabia, Russia, South Korea, the United States and China in 2022. Saudi Arabia made the maximum shipments of 1.47 million metric tons with an increase of 1.5% as compared to the last year. Russia was the second largest supplier of plastics & its materials to Turkey with over 358K tons.


Currently, Japan is the leading exporter of plastics globally with net exports worth 559 thousand tons. France, Belgium, Philippines and Norway are other major plastics during 2022. On the other hand, Turkey is the top importer of plastic waste globally with net imports around 667 thousand tons in 2022. Czech Republic, India, Bulgaria and Uzbekistan are top markets for imports of plastic waste after Turkey.
