Russia, the world's leading fertiliser exporter
Although there was a 70% decline in Russian fertilisers exports. Russia exported around 19 billion dollars worth of fertilisers during the fiscal year 2022. Russia's fertiliser exports shipment volume was around 38 million tonnes in FY 2022.
Russia's major fertiliser exports include diammonium phosphate and Urea. In 2022, Diammonium phosphate exports from Russia were up by 9% while urea exports increased by 2.6%.
Russia has shifted its fertiliser exports to India, Turkey and Vietnam after Europe. During the financial year 2022, Russia's fertiliser exports to India increased 3 times as compared to 2021. These include nitrogen, mineral and potash fertilisers. As per Russia export data reports, around 3 billion dollars worth of fertilisers were exported to India in 2022. Russia’s fertiliser exports were recorded to be 12 billion dollars during 2021.
Whereas, the latest India import data suggests that Russia has exported over 34 lakh tonnes of Fertilisers during the financial period of April to February 2023. This is the highest volume recorded in the last few years. Out of which, 6 lakh tonnes of urea was imported during February 2023 while it was merely 2.80 lakh tonnes during the same period last year.
As per Russia customs data reports, the total exports from Russia to India hit a record 42 billion dollars during the first four months of the fiscal year 2023. India's Di-Ammonium Phosphate imports were around 7 lakh tonnes while Potash imports amounted to 0.45 lakh tonnes and urea imports were estimated to be 20 lakh tonnes during 2023.
European countries have always been the crucial importers of fertilisers from Russia. Although due to the sanctions, Russia's fertiliser exports to European countries has declined. During the fiscal year 2022, around 3448 metric tonnes of fertilisers were imported by European countries. On the other hand, Russian fertiliser imports were estimated around 194 million dollars during fiscal year 2021. During that period, Belarus was the leading exporter of fertilisers to Russia. According to the Russia import data, Belarus accounted for over 42 million dollars worth of fertiliser exports to Russia. Kazakhstan, Spain, Lithuania, Azerbaijan and Poland were other major fertiliser exporters to Russia.
