India exported around Rs 500 Million worth millets to Nepal

Millet is a major food crop of India. India is the second largest exporter of millets in the world after Ukraine. India exports around 15 different varieties of millets worldwide. These include Jowar, Bajra, Ragi, Buck Wheat, Amaranthus, Brown Top Millet, Barnyard Millet, Minor Millets, Proso Millet, Kodo Millet and Barnyard Millet etc.

India is among the leading millets producers in the world. India covers over 40% share of the global market. During the fiscal year 2022, India accounted for over 120 lakh tonnes worth of millets. India is followed by Niger and China in terms of global millets production. Whereas, in 2021, around 16 MMT worth of millets were produced. As compared to 2020, it is 27% more.    


According to the India import export data reports, India accounted for over 75 million dollars worth of millets exports in the fiscal year 2022. There was a considerable amount of increase in India's millets exports as compared to the 63 million dollars worth millets exports during FY 2021. 


As per our India export data reports, the major markets for India’s millet exports are the United Arab Emirates, Nepal, Oman, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Egypt, USA, UK and Yemen. Nepal, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia together contributes to around 60% of India's total millet exports. Morocco, Pakistan and Bahrain are other major emerging markets for India's millets exports. Last year, India's millets exports to Oman had shown 30% growth during FY 22.


India and Nepal are important trading partners. The major imports by Nepal from India includes cereals. These include rice, corn, wheat, millets, barley, grain sorghum, oats, etc. According to India customs data, Nepal imported millets worth around 5.6 million dollars in the fiscal year 2022. 


Whereas rice amounted to over 328 million dollars worth imports during 2022. Rice was followed by Maize ($125 M), Wheat ($21 M), Barley ($104 K), Sorghum ($35 K) and Oats ($15 K).  India's total cereal exports to Nepal were around 485 million dollars during 2022.


On the other hand, India's millet imports were increased by 11% during fiscal year 2022. According to the India import data of millets, around 284 thousand dollars worth of millets were imported during the financial year 2022. Last year it was estimated around 255 thousand dollars. 

 

The most favoured destinations by India for millets imports were the United States, Ukraine, and Turkey. The United States had over 65% share in India's total millet imports. Ukraine had over 52% share in India's millet imports followed by Turkey (12%).
