Indonesia to revive its apparel industry amid falling exports

Indonesia is the 13th biggest market for clothing and accessories. Over the years, Indonesian exports have seen frequent growth but it is declining since last year. According to the Indonesia import export data reports, textiles exports were $4.2 billion in 2020, while it was $11 billion during 2021. Indonesia's textiles exports grew to $12 billion in 2022. Whereas, during 2023, Indonesia’s textiles exports volume dropped by 15% to 1.5 million tons.

From March 2022 to March 2023, Indonesia’s textiles exports dropped by 10%. The United States is the top market for Indonesia's textiles exports. The United States  has over 19% in Indonesia’s total textile exports. The United States was responsible for over $5.2 million worth of textiles in 2021.


After the USA, Japan was the second leading textile importer from Indonesia with over $675 million worth during 2021. Other major markets for Indonesia's apparel and clothing  were Germany, South Korea, Australia, and Canada. 


India has also emerged as the crucial importer of fibres from Indonesia. As per Indonesia customs data reports, fibre export shipments to India rose to 150% during the financial year 2022. Whereas, Bangladesh garments imports had seen a rise of 15%. China’s imports were also record low in 2022 due to low demand.


Whereas, exports to Turkey, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Vietnam, and Australia have seen rapid growth. Currently, among textiles and apparels, garments cover over 8% volume followed by Spinning (2%), Weaving, Dyeing, Printing (1%) and other textiles materials (0.6%).


On the other hand, Indonesia’s Imports dropped to 18% in 2023. The previous year Indonesia import data, the fabric imports were estimated around $4.8 billion during 2022. It was 10% more as compared to the fiscal year 2021. The imports were around $4.3 billion in 2021 and $3.2 billion in 2020. 


The majority of the textiles import shipments come from China accounting for over $4 million having a share of 7% in Indonesia's overall textiles exports. After China, South Korea, Vietnam, Hong Kong, United States, Brazil, Japan and Thailand were the significant textiles exporters to Indonesia during 2021. 


The Indonesian government is now looking to revive its falling textile exports. Cotton and Rayon fabrics are most used in Indonesia. In terms of consumption, Rayon has 30% share and Cotton has 28% share in the Indonesian market. The current forecasts suggest that the fabrics exports are expected to cross $115 million with an increase of 1%. Whereas, the imports are set to surge $2 billion by 2026. The government is taking adequate measures to expand its textiles exports.
