Recently, the Mexican government has announced the resumption of meat product imports from Uruguay after almost three years. Uruguay meat exports are allowed to sell their goods to Mexico for the next two years. These will include sheep, buffalo meat products. Uruguay has an adequate amount of meat production to fulfil the Mexican market demand.

Mexico has always been a potential market for Uruguay meat products. Mexican sanitary authorities have approved around 22 meat exporters from Uruguay  to sell their dairy products to Mexico. Livestock, Fisheries and Agriculture are the key sectors of Mexico. These cover over 25% share of Uruguay's total exports. 


Ground report suggests that there are over 50,000 farms occupied by the livestock industry in Uruguay. 90% of it belongs to meat production. The total value was estimated to be around $1.8 billion dollars in 2022.


Uruguay is the 9th largest beef exporter in the world. Whereas, Uruguay sold over 90% of its sheep meat to different parts of the world. Mexico is a crucial trading partner of Uruguay. According to the Mexico import data reports, around $164 million worth of goods were imported from Uruguay during the fiscal year 2022. These were mainly rice, iron, steel flat rolled products, cheese, bovine skin hides, plywood, wool, textiles, medicaments, office goods, etc. 


Rice was the top contributor to Uruguay's exports to Mexico with over 25% share. The second most favoured imports by Mexico were Iron and Steel products.  As per Mexico customs data reports, the import value of these goods were worth around $32 million during FY 2022. 


Whereas, Mexico exports to Uruguay crossed over $200 billion in 2022. According to the Historical Mexico export data suggests that the exports are growing at an annual rate of 4%. Mexico's top exports to Uruguay are Motor cars, trucks, video displays, refrigerators, hair products, computers, beer, cleaning equipment, etc.
