Egypt, the world's leading wheat importer

Wheat is a highly imported product in Egypt. Egypt stands as the world’s leading wheat importer. According to the Egypt import export data reports, the country has wheat imports worth over $3.5 billion during fiscal year 2022. There was around a 5% increase in the imports of wheat by Egypt as compared to the previous year. 

The majority of Egypt's wheat imports came from Russia which is the biggest wheat exporter in the world. In the financial year 2022, Russia was responsible for over 50% of Egypt’s overall wheat imports and valued at around $2.5 billion. Apart from Russia, Ukraine and Romania were other prominent wheat suppliers to Egypt with 18% share respectively.


There were few notable wheat imports made by Egypt from France, United States, Australia, and Uruguay. As per Egypt import data, Aston Agro Industrial, GTCS Trading, Solaris Commodities and Orsett Trading have made the maximum amount of wheat import shipments from Egypt during that fiscal year.


Egypt import data report shows that AO Actoh and Agropromyshlennaya Korporatsiya Ast Kompani M from Russia were the leading grain suppliers to Egypt with over 10% share in the country’s wheat imports. Apart from Egypt, Nigeria and Indonesia are the top grain importers posing more competition in terms of grain imports.


On the other hand, Egypt’s wheat exports were recorded to be $38 K during the financial year 2022. According to the Egypt export data, the country’s wheat imports came from the United States, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Some of the prolific wheat suppliers from Egypt are  Regina Co, Nestle Egypt, Almounajed and Nefertiti for natural oils & herbs.


There is a positive growth seen in Egypt's wheat exports to the United States, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. Although the wheat exports to Japan, Bahrain and Australia have declined significantly. But the country relies mostly on the imports of wheat to sustain its growing market demand. 


Whereas, the country's cereal exports were estimated to be $5.4 million during fiscal year 2022. Jordan and Sudan were the top destinations for Egypt's cereals exports responsible for over 25% share of Egypt's overall cereals exports. Whereas, Spain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Israel are the top cereals buyers from Egypt. 


On the other hand, Egypt customs data reports show over $12 million worth of cereal imports were made by Egypt in the financial year 2022. Turkey was the biggest wheat supplier to Egypt having over 74% share in Egypt's cereals imports. Whereas, some notable amounts of cereal imports were made from the United Arab Emirates, France, Italy, Germany, Poland and Hungary.


Chipsy for food industries and Ahmed Mohamed El Shamy were the top cereals import companies from Egypt accounting for over 62% share in Egypt's overall imports. Whereas, top cereals export companies from Egypt were Egyptian Starch & Glucose Manufacturing and El Zomoroda For Corn Products.
