Bangladesh vegetable exports drop by 60%

Over the past three years, Bangladesh vegetable exports declined significantly. According to Bangladesh import export data, the country’s vegetable exports during  2021 were estimated to be around $271 million. Whereas, in 2022, it came down to $131 million while the latest reports, the exports were $68 million during 2023.

Bangladesh vegetable exports decreased by 60% as compared to previous year. This is due to the shortage of cargo space and lack of scanners at the country's airports. Also, during the covid pandemic, the vegetable supply has been affected. This resulted in the decline of vegetable exports from Bangladesh.

Bangladesh's key vegetable exports includes lemons, potato, root vegetables, cabbages, cauliflowers, Snake gourd, broccoli, and terragon products. Malaysia, the United Kingdom and Sri Lanka were the most prominent markets for Bangladesh vegetables. Malaysia imported over $49 million with over 22% of Bangladesh vegetables exports in 2023.

Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Nepal, and Singapore were among the importers of vegetables from Bangladesh. Eva Impex, Amin Trading, Kalam and Sons were the top suppliers from Bangladesh responsible for the maximum number of shipments in 2023.

As per Bangladesh import data reports, the country’s vegetable exports were recorded to be $1.6 billion in 2023. Bangladesh's major vegetable imports include lentils, peas, onions, chickpeas, garlic, tomato, beans and potato. India and Australia were the leading vegetable suppliers to Bangladesh responsible for over 67% market share.

Canada was the third biggest vegetable supplier with around 20% share of the country's overall vegetable imports. Bangladesh's most favoured markets for the vegetable imports were China, Namibia, Turkey, Myanmar, Argentina and the Netherlands.

Centre State Exports from Australia, Richardson International from Canada and Arbel Bakliyat Hububat Sanayi from Turkey were the leading vegetables export companies responsible for the maximum number of shipments.

Bangladesh fruit imports were recorded to be around $530 million in 2023. Bangladesh's most imported fruits items were Oranges, apples, dates, grapes, betel nuts, dragon fruits, mandarins, citrus fruits, and almonds. India, China, and South Africa were the most favoured destinations for Bangladesh's fruits imports.

Egypt, Myanmar, United Arab Emirates, Iraq and Indonesia were the fastest growing markets for Bangladesh fruit imports. Whereas, Bangladesh fruits exports were merely $8 million in 2023. The United Kingdom, Qatar, and India were the top markets for Bangladesh fruits exports. Hopefully, this fiscal year, the Bangladesh vegetables and fruits exports might see positive growth.
