Japan's coffee imports from Vietnam rose to $336 million during FY 2023
Japan is the most prominent importer of coffee around the world. Robusta coffee is more preferred by people as compared to Arabica coffee. According to the Japan import export data reports, the country has imported over $994 million worth of coffee this year. Japan's majority of the coffee imports came from Vietnam which was the top supplier. During August only, Vietnam exported over 9,000 tonnes of coffee worth around $28 million.
Compared to last year's exports, there was around a 30% increase seen in the coffee imports from Japan. As per Japan import data reports, around 78,000 tonnes of coffee export shipments worth around $336 million were made by Vietnam to Japan. The price for per tonne coffee shipment from Vietnam was estimated to $2723 with 10% increase compared to the last year.
Among Vietnam's robusta coffee exports saw a jump of 66% in the Japanese market whereas there was 6% decline in Vietnam's Arabica coffee exports to Japan during this financial year. Intimex group and Vinh help were the top coffee export companies from Vietnam having over 15.23% share in the coffee exports to Vietnam.
Apart from Vietnam, Brazil, Colombia and Ethiopia were other major coffee exporters to Japan. As per Japan customs data reports, Brazil and Colombia were responsible for over 24% and 16% share of Japan’s overall coffee imports. In terms of import value, Japan's coffee imports from Brazil were $438 million, Colombia - $292 million, Ethiopia - $130 million and Guatemala - 128 million respectively.
Japan has shown a considerable amount of interest in imports from Germany, the United States, Switzerland and Italy. These were the fastest growing markets for Japan’s coffee imports. On the other hand, Japan’s coffee exports were merely $28 million this year. On the other hand, Japan's coffee extract imports saw record growth during October 2023.
As compared to the previous month, there was over 52% increase and imports shipments hit 2.6 tons worth over $25 million. Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Malaysia and Indonesia were the leading coffee extract suppliers to Japan. In terms of import value, Japan has imported $7.5 million worth of coffee extract from Vietnam followed by Colombia ($4.8 million) and Brazil ($4.8 million) respectively.
According to Japan export data, China and Hong Kong were the top coffee suppliers to Japan responsible for 67% share of coffee exports to Japan. Whereas, Russia, South Korea, Singapore, and Philippines were other major coffee importers from Japan. Marubeni Corporation, Mitsui and Olam International were some of the prominent coffee import export companies from Japan.
