Indonesia exported over 361 MMT of thermal coal in 2023

 

Indonesia stands out as the world's biggest thermal coal exporter during 2023. As per Indonesia import export data, the country has shipped over 361 MMT of thermal coal in 2023. Compared to the financial year 2022, the thermal coal exports were up by 56 MT and recorded a 12% increase. 2023 was the biggest year for Indonesia in terms of thermal coal exports as the country accounted for nearly half of the world's thermal coal exports.

Indonesia's thermal coal exports are rising by 7% on a year by year increase. Indonesia's biggest thermal coal buyer was China, recording a 20% increase. As per Indonesia customs data reports, around 100 MMT of thermal coal imports were made by China. India was the second leading importer receiving 96 MMT of thermal coal last year. 

Whereas, the Philippines was the third biggest buyer of Indonesian thermal coal. However, Indonesia's thermal coal shipments fell by 8%. The fastest growing markets for Indonesia's thermal coal exports were Malaysia, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand and Taiwan. Marunda Grahamineral and Mitrabara Adiperdana were the top thermal coal export companies from Indonesia responsible for the maximum number of shipments during last year. 

Palembang port from Indonesia showed a 75% increase in the thermal coal shipments in 2023. Tanjung Bara, Balikpapan, Muara Pantai, Samarinda and Tarakan ports from Indonesia were responsible for a notable increase in the thermal coal shipments. New Zealand Steel from New Zealand, Itochu Corporation Toklv from Japan and Mitsubishi Corporation from Philippines were the top thermal coal importing companies from Indonesia.

In terms of thermal coal imports, the country has imported merely $83 million in 2023. 90% of Malaysia's imports thermal coal came from Australia which is the biggest exporter of coal along with Russia. Hanwa Co from Australia was the biggest thermal coal exporting company from Indonesia.

Apart from coal, the country's charcoal exports were over $285 million in 2023. South Korea was the biggest market for the imports of charcoal from  Indonesia with 26% market share. Saudi Arabia was responsible for around 10% of Indonesia's charcoal exports. Iraq, Japan, Russia, Netherlands and the United States were among the fastest growing markets for Indonesian charcoal exports. In terms of coal exports, Indonesia's biggest competitor is Australia which is the top coal exporter. Although , Russia, United States, South Africa and Canada are other leading coal exporters in the world.
