Australia was the world's leading wheat exporter in 2023
Food grains are the main export commodity of Australia. These include wheat, soybean meal, maize, nuts, etc. Australia is also the world's biggest producer and exporter of wheat globally. Although, in 2023, Australia's wheat exports declined to 7% in comparison with FY 2022. According to Australia import export data, the country's overall wheat exports were $9.3 billion in 2023. Whereas, during FY 2022, it was $10 billion. But still, Australia regains its position as the world’s leading wheat exporter.
Along with Australia, the United States, Canada, Russia and France were other leading wheat exporting countries in the world. China was the biggest market for Australian wheat exports contributing to over 21% market share. In 2023, China imported around $2 billion worth of wheat from Australia. Along with China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, South Korea and Thailand were some notable wheat importers from Australia.
Also, Australia found new markets for wheat exports in the form of Yemen, Japan, Malaysia, and Iraq. Afrigrain Trading, Graincorp Operations, CBH groups, and Australian Grain Export were the leading grain export companies from Australia. Australia import data shows that there were $64 million worth of wheat imports recorded by Australia during last fiscal year. In comparison to $535 thousand worth of wheat imports during fiscal year 2022, there was a massive drop of 85%.
The top destinations for Australia's wheat imports were Jordan, Turkey, India, Lebanon and the United Kingdom respectively. Akula Foods and Victoria Foods were the biggest wheat import companies from Australia in terms of shipments. In terms of maize exports, Australia has earned around $40 million during the financial year 2023. South Korea was the biggest market for Australia's maize exports contributing to around 80% market share. Among the fastest growing markets for Australian maize exports were New Zealand, Fiji and Philippines.
On the other hand, 60% of the Australian corn imports came from the United States last year. Whereas, Argentina and New Zealand were other significant maize exporters to Australia in 2023. Among the top corn supplying companies from Australia were Unigrain, Blue Lake Milling and Quaker Oats Australia with a notable amount of shipments last year.
According to Australia export data reports, there was a 27% decline in the oil seeds exports from Australia last year. Over $4.5 billion worth of oil seeds exports from Australia were recorded in 2023. Japan was the top oil seeds importer from Australia with 18% market share. The United Arab Emirates, Germany, Belgium, France and Pakistan were other significant oil seeds importers from Australia for fiscal year 2023.
Australia's major oilseeds exports includes cereals, rapeseeds, soybeans, groundnuts, locust beans, etc. Whereas, Canada, China, United States, and India were the top oilseeds importing countries from Australia. Agrocorp International, Demeter Grains and Monsanto Holland were the leading oilseeds exporting companies from Australia.
Groundnut exports totaled to be $2.4 million during last financial year. Over 70% of Australia's total groundnut exports went to New Zealand followed by Japan, Fiji and Cambodia.
