Germany's scrap exports declined by 3% in 2023

Scrap often referred to as the waste can be the most profitable item for export. Some of the most exported scrap items are copper, aluminium, lead, brass, auto batteries, can, etc. Scrap metals are the billion dollar market. Germany is the second biggest exporter of scrap items globally. According to Germany import export data, Germany exported around 7.9 million metric tons of scrap items in 2023. The Netherlands, Turkey and India were the biggest markets for Germany’s scrap metals exports.

Scrap Iron

Germany is the second biggest exporter of scrap iron globally. For the financial year 2023, Germany's iron scrap exports dropped to 18%. Germany export data shows over $4.3 billion worth of scrap iron was exported during last fiscal year. Italy was the leading market for Germany's scrap copper exports.


As per Germany trade statistics, Italy has imported nearly $746 million  worth of scrap iron from Germany in 2023. In terms of export share, Belgium (16%), Netherlands (15%), Finland (14%) and Luxembourg (7%) were the fastest growing markets for Germany's scrap iron exports. 


On the other hand, Germany's scrap iron imports were $1.6 billion in 2023 showing a decline of 30%. The top destinations for Germany's scrap iron imports were Czech Republic, Netherlands, Poland and France. TSR Metals, EMR European Metal and RTB Rohstoff Terminal were other scrap iron import companies from Germany with a notable amount of shipments last year.


Scrap Copper

Germany is the second leading exporter of scrap copper globally. In 2023, Germany's scrap copper exports were estimated to be $2 billion with a decline of 6% compared to FY 2022. The fastest growing markets for German scrap copper were Belgium ($255 Million), Austria ($248 Million), Poland ($242 Million) and China ($240 Million) respectively. The leading scrap copper export companies from Germany were Scholz Recycling, Metallum Metal Trading and Nord-Schrott.


Whereas per Germany import data, the country's scrap copper imports stood at around $3.3 billion for the financial year 2023. There was a significant decline of 16% as compared to FY 2022. The Netherlands was the leading scrap copper exporter to Germany with 18% market share. Along with the Netherlands, France, Poland, Switzerland and Austria were other prominent scrap copper exporters to Germany in 2023.


Scrap Aluminium

In terms of scrap aluminium exports, the country's overall scrap aluminium exports were recorded to be $2 billion during last fiscal year. As compared to fiscal year 2022, there was a 10% decline in the scrap aluminium exports of Germany. Italy was the top importer of scrap aluminium with around $300 million worth of exports last year.


Along with Italy, Austria, Poland, Netherlands, and Switzerland were the fastest growing markets for Germany's scrap aluminium exports. Whereas, Germany exported over $1.7 billion worth of scrap aluminium imports last year. The Netherlands, Poland and Austria were the leading scrap aluminium importer to Germany during fiscal year 2023.

Indra recycling, Limany Netherlands, Frans Muysers Boomkwekerijen and PreZero Pyral were the top aluminium scrap exporting companies from Germany.
