Croatia's fruits & vegetables market

During the financial year 2023, Croatia's fruits exports registered 52% growth compared to FY 2022. As per Croatia export data reports, the country's fruits exports are estimated to be $138 million in 2023. Croatia's top fruits exports include citrus fruits, cashew  nuts, apples, apricots, bananas, grapes, melons, etc. Slovenia and Germany were the leading markets for Croatia's fruits exports with 28% and 18% respectively.

The other prominent markets for Croatia's fruits exports were Italy, Serbia, Hungary and Bosnia & Herzegovina. Ledo Plus, Fresh Box, Frigo Bonsai and Setovia Voce were among the leading fruit export companies from Croatia. Whereas, Croatia's top fruits imports were bananas, citrus fruits, apricots, melons, dates, etc. According to Croatia import data reports, the country's fruits imports were mostly from Slovenia (28%), Germany (18%), Italy (11%), Serbia (5.5%) and Hungary (5%).


On the other hand, Croatia imported over $112 million worth of vegetables with 20% growth in the last fiscal year. Slovenia and Italy were the leading importers of vegetables from Croatia with 54% share of vegetables imports. Slovenia has made a notable amount of shipments to Germany, Czech Republic, Serbia and Bosnia & Herzegovina. 


Croatia's key vegetable imports include tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, cabbages, potatoes, and lentils. On the other hand, Croatia's key vegetable imports include potatoes, tomatoes, onion, carrots, cabbages, legumes, etc. Italy was the most favoured destination by Croatia for the  vegetable imports with an estimated worth of $43 million. 


Also, there was a rise in Croatia's vegetable imports from Germany, Netherlands, Spain and Poland in the last fiscal year. Osatina Grupa, Ledo Plus, Podravka and Polijoprivredni Institut Osijek were among the top vegetable export companies from Croatia with higher shipment volumes last year.


In terms of production, Croatia's key fruits products are apples, mandarin, plums and cherries. Although Croatia relies largely on the fruits and vegetables imports, it possesses a great potential in horticulture. Lack of modern implements, production techniques, and production segregation are the major challenges for Croatia's horticulture sector.


Recently, there was record growth in Croatia's strawberry imports from Albania. Vietnam’s live tree exports were recorded to be $7.7 million during fiscal year 2023. Although, there was a 27% rise in the live tree exports from Croatia. The top markets for Croatia’s live trees exports were Slovenia (35%), Hungary (16%) and Kyrgyz Republic (11%). 


In terms of cereal exports, Croatia’s cereals exports declined by 25%. As per Croatia import export data, the country’s cereals exports reached $407 million in 2023. Italy was the leading cereals importer from Croatia representing 60% market share. Among the fastest growing markets for Croatia's cereals exports were Slovenia, Austria, Spain and Malta.
