India's Metal Industry : Stats & Figures

 India is the prominent market for metals exports. India is the 6th biggest exporter of precious metals and 9th leading exporter of metals globally. Iron and Steel are the major metal exports of India. Other crucial metals exports from India are aluminium, copper, zinc, lead, nickel and tin respectively.

India export data shows the country's overall metals exports to be over $45 billion during last fiscal year. The United States was the biggest importer of metals from India and contributed to 15% of the country's overall metal exports. Among the fastest growing markets for India's metals exports were Italy, United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Turkey, China and the Netherlands.  


Iron and steel were the most exported base metals from India. According to India import export data, the country's iron and steel exports were estimated to be around $13.4 billion during fiscal year 2023. Whereas, India's iron and steel articles exports recorded to be $9.8 billion last year.


 Italy was the biggest importer of aluminium items from India with 16% market share. The value was estimated to be $1.4 billion during last year. Also, there were notable aluminium exports to Belgium, Nepal, the United States, Spain and China. JSW Steel, Jindal Stainless, Tata Steel and Arcelormittal Nippon Steel were the leading steel export companies from India with higher shipments last year. 


Marcegaglia Carbon Steel from Italy, Coilinter Internationaler from Germany and Duferco from the United Kingdom were the top iron and steel import companies. Aluminium and its products are the second most exported metal exports from India. In 2023, India exported over $8.9 billion worth of aluminium & its products. 


The United States was the top importer of aluminium and its articles from India with 25% market share. Among the fastest growing markets were the United Arab Emirates (8%), Saudi Arabia (3.4%), Netherlands (2.2%) and Germany (2%). Sterling Tools, Jindal SAW, Zetwerk and Jolly Clamps  were the top aluminium & items exporting companies from India.


Copper was the third biggest metal export item from India. According to India customs data, the country's copper & its articles exports were estimated to be $1.8 billion during last fiscal year. Saudi Arabia was responsible for 39% of India's total copper exports worth around $474 million during FY 2023. The fastest growing markets for India's copper exports were the United States, China, United Arab Emirates, South Africa and Germany. Shipment wise, India's top aluminium & its products export companies were Hindalco Industries, Vedanta Limited and Agrawal Metal Works.


In terms of zinc exports, India exported over $1.3 million worth of zinc in 2023. Saudi Arabia and Turkey were the two biggest markets for India's zinc exports with imports over $809 million in the last fiscal year. India has also recorded a jump in zinc exports to the United States, Thailand, Kenya and Algeria. 


India's other prominent metal exports includes ferrous metal items ($760 million), lead & its products ($480 million), Nickel & products ($202 million) and Tin items ($11 million) during the last fiscal year 2023. Hindustan Zinc Limited, Kothari Metsol and Metal Alloys were the top metals items export companies from India with highest number of shipments.
