Italy's Metal Industry Analysis
Italy is among the biggest markets for base metals and its articles. Among Italy's top base metals exports are iron, steel, nickel, copper and aluminium. Italy is also the biggest market for Iron and Steel exports globally. According to Italy import export data of iron and steel, the overall export earnings were estimated to be $17 billion in fiscal year 2023.
There was a 4% rise in Italy's steel exports during FY 2023. Italy's steel export shipments were over 2 million tons. Germany was the biggest importer of iron and steel globally, representing over 20% of Italy's iron and steel exports. As per Italy export data, around $3.5 billion worth of iron and steel was imported by Germany last year.
France, Poland and Spain were other notable importers of iron and steel. Long products steel exports from Italy were over 1.18 million tons, and flat products exports reached 856.91 thousand tons in 2023. Cogne Acciai Speciali, Italfond Spa Socio and Posco International are some of the leading iron & steel companies from Italy.
Whereas, Iron and Steel articles exports from Italy soared to $22 billion during fiscal year 2023. Germany was the leading iron and steel articles exporter globally. Germany imported a record $4 billion worth of iron and steel articles from Italy. Among the leading markets for Italy's iron and steel articles exports were mainly France, United States, Spain and Poland.
Aluminium was the second most exported metal from Italy. As per Italy customs data, Italy’s aluminium exports were over $8.6 billion in fiscal year 2023. There was an 8% decline in Italy’s aluminium exports compared to previous years. European countries were the leading markets for Italy’s metal exports.
Germany was the biggest importer of aluminium from Italy having 21% share of Italy’s overall aluminium exports. Among other significant markets for Italy's aluminium exports were France, Spain, Austria, Hungary and Poland. Fondital, Reynaers Aluminum and Eural Gnutti are some of the leading aluminium export companies from Italy.
After aluminium, copper and its articles exports from Italy were estimated to be around $5.6 billion in FY 2023. The majority of Italy’s copper exports went to Germany (15%) and France (14%). Whereas, China, Tunisia, Spain and Austria were the fastest growing markets for Italy’s copper exports. Agi Emea, Forgiatura Morandini, and Ilta Inox are the top Italian manufacturing companies for copper articles.
On the other hand, Italy's nickel and its related articles exports were over $705 million during FY 2023. Compared to FY 2022, there was 33% increase in Italy's nickel exports. The United States was the top destination for Italy's nickel exports followed by Germany, Singapore and the United Kingdom. Nuovo Pignone, Petrolvalves and Mesa Italiaare among the leading nickel export companies from Italy.
Other prominent metals exports from Italy were zinc ($281 million) and tin ($60 million). On the other hand, steel was the most imported item of Italy. According to Italy import data, steel imports from Italy were around 7.2 million tons. The overall metals imports of Italy were estimated to be around $61 billion in 2023. These include iron, steel aluminium, copper, zinc, cermet, lead and nickel articles.
