Japan's clothing & textiles imports declined by 3.5% in 2024
Japan is the 20th biggest textiles exporter in the world. Japan's overall textiles exports stood at around $8 billion in 2023. Whereas per Japan import data reports, the country's textiles imports are estimated to be around $24 billion with a decline of 8% compared to FY 2022. The key segments include silk, woollen, cotton, paper yarn, carpets, carpets, embroidery, laminated, knitted and not knitted fabrics.
According to Japan import export data, these products earned around $4.84 billion during the last fiscal year. In terms of export value, the top gainers were Synthetic textiles ($1.16 billion), Special Yarns ($953 million), Knitted fabrics ($874 million), Apparel & Clothing accessories ($481 million), Worn Textiles ($437 million), Cotton fabrics ($267 million), Woollen fabrics ($130 million), Silk ($26 million) and Paper Yarn ($15.9 million).
Synthetic fabrics were the most exported items from Japan. Although, there was a decline of 1.8% during last year. The top markets for Japan's special yarn exports were China (30%), United States (17%) and Italy (6.5%). China and Vietnam were the leading markets for Japan's synthetic textiles exports with 45% market share. Whereas, China and the United States accounted for maximum shipments of textiles from Japan.
The biggest buyers for Japan's textiles exports are China, Vietnam, and the United States. China accounted for 24% share of Japan's textiles exports followed by Vietnam (11%), United States (10%) and South Korea (4.3%). There was significant growth in Japan's textiles exports to Thailand, Indonesia, Germany and Hong Kong. The top Japanese companies for clothing accessories were Uniqlo, Matsuoka Corporation, Verde Trading and Unitika Trading.
In terms of imports, Japan's majority of the textiles imports came from China which had around 55% market share. In 2023, Japan's most favoured destinations for fabric imports were Vietnam, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia and Burma.
There was high demand for non woven fabrics and textiles articles in the Japanese market. Japan customs data shows $1.13 billion worth of non woven fabrics were imported by Japan whereas textiles articles exports were $505 million during fiscal year 2023. Teijin Frontier Shonai, Suntop, Itochu Corporation and Takisada Nagoya were other leading textiles import companies from Japan.
Whereas, in 2024, Japan’s textiles imports declined by 3.5%. During January, Japan's textiles imports were recorded to be $2 billion. There was an 8% decline in January 2024. The fastest growing markets for textiles were Vietnam, China, and Burma. As Japan is among the leading importer of textiles globally.
