Rise in Agricultural imports by China due to rising food security concerns

Due to rising population and adverse climatic conditions,China’s agricultural imports have increased over the past few years. This is mainly due to the adverse climatic conditions and over population. 

According to the China import data of Agricultural products, around 22 billion US dollars worth goods were shipped in December, 2022. That was 20% more than the previous month. 

As per China customs data, China’s major agricultural imports were soybeans, corn, sorghum, cotton, livestock, pork, meat, dairy, poultry and horticulture products mostly imported to the United States, Japan, Hong Kong, Germany, South Korea, and Vietnam.

China’s top 5 Agricultural imports

Soybean

China is the leading importer of Soybeans in the world. Also, it's the 5th most imported product by China. In 2020, China imported 36 billion USD of Soybeans. Whereas in 2022, China imported around 90 million tonnes of soybeans. The top soybeans exporters to China were the United States of America, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Russia.

Cotton

China is the leading importer and exporter of Cotton in the world. As per the year wise China import export data, in 2021, China cotton imports were around 1.6 billion USD. As for China 2022 imports, China imported over 2.9 billion USD. The major importers of Cotton from China were Vietnam, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Nigeria and Cambodia. Recently, China recorded an increase in shipments from Iran, Benin and Ghana.

Corn

China is the top importer of corn in the world with over 7.1 billion USD as per the China trade data 2022 reports. It was around 8 billion US Dollars in 2021. Brazil was the top exporter of Corn to China followed by the United States, and Ukraine. Brazil contributes to around 70% of total corn imports from China. The major reason behind this is low rates as compared to the United States.

Hides and Skins

China is the leading destination for raw hides and skins of bovine and equine animals imports and exports. It is the 7th market for the imports of raw skin and hides. For the financial year 2021, Raw hides and skins imports from China were around 1.2 billion US Dollars. 

On the other hand, exports totaled around 11 million US Dollars. The United States, Australia, Canada, Argentina and the Netherlands were the top exporters of Raw hides and skins to China. Experts suggest that raw skins and hides imports from China could increase by 48% in 2022.

Meat & Edible Meat

Meat & Edible meat was the fifth most imported good by China. These include the meat of swine, sheep, goat, and bovine animals etc. For the fiscal year 2021, the total meat imports by China are worth 31 billion USD mostly from Brazil (7.5 billion USD), the United States of America (4 billion USD), Spain (3.7 billion USD), New Zealand (2.52 billion USD) and Argentina (2.2 billion USD). it was 22% more as compared to the previous year.

China major exports in 2022

As per  December 2022 China export data reports, Electrical & Mechanical Goods (175 billion USD), Machinery (144 billion USD), Electronics (78 billion USD), Processors & Controllers (17 billion USD), Integrated Circuits (13 billion USD), Mobile (12 billion USD), Broadcasting Equipments (11 billion USD), Plastics (9 billion USD), Iron & Steel Articles (8 billion USD), and Agricultural Products (7.8 billion USD) were the most exported products by China.

The United States (44 billion USD), Hong Kong (28 billion USD), Japan  (14 billion USD), Vietnam  (13 billion USD), Singapore  (11 billion USD), India  (9 billion USD), Netherlands  (8.8 billion USD), Malaysia  (8.64 billion USD), Germany  (8.43 billion USD), and Russia  (8.60 billion USD) were the major export trading partners of China.

As per China import export data reports of 2022, China’s major imports were Electrical Equipments (85.97 billion USD), Electronics (63.66 billion USD), Fuels (47.35 billion USD), Integrated Circuits (34.52 billion USD), Crude Petroleum (30.73 billion USD), Agricultural goods (22.22 billion USD), Iron Ores (83.65 billion USD), LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) (76.14 billion USD), Soybean (69.69 billion USD), and Copper products (42.70 billion USD).

China imports by country data reflects that Taiwan (19.22 billion USD), the United States (15.91 billion USD), Japan (14.71 billion USD), South Korea (14.37 billion USD), Australia (11.07 billion USD), Malaysia (10.21 billion USD), Germany (9.08 billion USD), Russia (8.99 billion USD), Brazil (8.21 billion USD), and Vietnam (8.13 billion USD) were the major exporter countries to China in 2022.
