Sri Lanka Banned 300 Consumer Goods to Recover Losses
Recently, the Sri Lankan government banned the global import export data of non essential consumer items to recover losses. These include various consumer goods such as shampoo, perfume, deodorants, coconuts, suitcases, trunks, etc. The total product count is 300.
Whereas essential goods like aircrafts, ships, electronic products imports have been paused as well. This decision came after the 51 billion foreign debt on the country during the political crisis. As per latest Sri Lanka customs data statistics, total exports stands at 16 billion US Dollars while imports are estimated around 18 billion USD.

Coconuts
Coconut (copra), palm kernel or babassu oil are another banned item by the Sri Lankan government. According to the Sri Lanka import export data of 2021, the coconut exports were estimated around 177 billion US Dollars.
Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea and India are the top coconut exporting countries to Sri Lanka. Being the leading coconut and palm oil exporter, Indonesia contributes around 46% of the total coconut imports of Sri Lanka.
Chocolates
Chocolate and its preparations are among the banned consumer goods in Sri Lanka. Earlier, Sri Lanka's imports chocolate were 150% up in the financial year 2021 as compared to the 2020. Sri Lanka's chocolate imports worth 11 million US Dollars in 2021 while it was 5.6 million US Dollars in 2020. India was the top exporter of Chocolate to Sri Lanka with 40% share of total imports. Other major chocolate exporters were Switzerland, Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, Singapore and Russia.
Essential Oils, Perfumes, Cosmetics
Singapore is the leading exporter of essential oils, perfumes, cosmetics and toiletries to Sri Lanka. According to the Sri Lanka shipment data, Singapore has 56% share in Sri Lanka's essential oils, perfumes, cosmetics and toiletries imports. Other major contributors were Canada (14%) and the United States (12%). For the financial year 2022, Sri Lanka's essential oils, perfumes, cosmetics imports were estimated to be around 58%.
Wood and Wood Articles
According to the Sri Lanka export data, wood and its articles exports totaled 22 million US Dollars in 2021. On the other imports were 14 million US Dollars. Sri Lanka imports by country reports suggest that China, Turkey and India are the leading furniture exporters to Sri Lanka. Whereas, majority of Sri Lanka's exports were to India, Norway and Germany.
Shampoos
Current statistics suggest that the total shampoo imports from Sri Lanka were around 2 million kilograms in 2022. The top shampoo exporting countries to Sri Lanka are Norway, Italy, Germany and Poland. Sri Lanka's shampoo imports are increasing at the rate of 3% per year. Sri Lanka's shampoos imports are expected to reach 2.4 million kilograms by 2025.
