 Tanzania has rich coal deposits. Tanzania has over 1.9 billion tonnes of coal reserves. According to the Tanzania customs data, around 225 million dollars of coal exports were recorded from Tanzania in the financial year 2023. There was a tremendous amount of jump in exports of coal from Tanzania.


Over the years, coal exports from Tanzania have increased significantly. In 2021, it was 13 million dollars. While as per Tanzania import export data, last year coal exports were merely 22 million dollars. This year, Tanzania's coal exports increased by 780%. Reason being the disrupted coal supply in Europe due to the Ukraine-Russia war. Tanzania has come out as the alternative to Europe's energy crisis.


The major markets for Tanzania’s coal exports are Kenya, Uganda, Congo, Rwanda, Poland, Senegal, India and Hong Kong. Currently, the top markets in terms of coal exports are China, India, Indonesia, Australia, Russia and the United States.


Tanzania has rich mineral deposits. Minerals contribute to over 40% of Tanzania's total mineral exports. Diamond is the crucial commodity export from Tanzania. In 2021, Tanzania's diamond exports were estimated around 8 million dollars. As per Tanzania export data, it reached 63 million dollars in the financial year 2022. The major buyers of Tanzanian diamond were Brazil, Uruguay, China, Madagascar, South Africa and Hong Kong. 


On the other hand, there was a decline in gold exports from Tanzania. In the financial year 2022, Tanzania's gold exports were around 2.7 billion dollars. Whereas, in 2021, gold exports from Tanzania will be worth 3 billion dollars. The major markets for gold exports were South Africa, United Arab Emirates, Kenya, India and Switzerland. Anglo Gold Ashanti, Barrick Gold, Anglogold are the top Tanzania gold export companies.




Tanzania's copper exports reached 9 million dollars during the financial year 2022. On the other hand, Tanzania's refined copper exports were estimated around 225 million dollars. The top markets for Tanzania's raw and refined copper exports are China, India, Thailand and Saudi Arabia.


While as per our Tanzania import data reports, Tanzania's refined copper imports accounted for 8 million dollars in FY 2021. Zambia, South Africa, Turkey, India and Spain are the top export markets for copper to Tanzania. The Tanzanian government is currently aiming at 104 million dollars raw copper exports by 2025.


Tanzania did a significant amount of Iron & Steel exports in the financial year 2022. As per the Tanzania trade data, iron and steel exports were totaled to be 76 million dollars. The major export destinations for Tanzania's iron and steel exports are Zambia, Belgium, the United States, Kenya and Congo.
