Australia exported over 400,170 tonnes of sorghum in April
Sorghum is an important agri export commodity of Australia. Australia is the world's 3rd biggest sorghum exporter after the United States and Argentina. According to the Australia customs data reports, around 2100 million metric tons worth sorghum was exported from Australia during the fiscal year 2022.
China was the top sorghum exporter from Australia with exports worth over 378 million dollars. Whereas other major sorghum importers from Australia were Japan, Kenya, Taiwan, and Philippines. In terms of worldwide sorghum exports, Australia is facing stiff competition from China, Japan and Kenya while Australia's sorghum exports to Botswana, Uruguay and Ukraine have declined significantly.
During April 2023, Australia did record sorghum exports. According to the Australia import export data, Australia had exported over 400,170 million metric tonnes shipments of sorghum during April 2023.
China import data suggests that around 339433 worth sorghum imports shipments were made during April 2023. During this period, Australia's most of the sorghum exports were to China, Japan, Kenya, Taiwan and Philippines. Sorghum exports from Australia had seen a significant jump of 73 pc as compared to 231,216 million tonnes.
Whereas, Australia's Barley export shipments recorded to be 593,664 million metric tonnes. As per Australia export data of Barley, Mexico was the top importer with shipments worth 99000 million metric tonnes. Whereas Japan, Singapore, Mexico, Philippines and Vietnam were other major Barley importing countries.
On the other hand, according to the Australia import data, the majority of sorghum was imported from the United States contributing over 86% of the total Australia's exports. For the financial year 2022, the total sorghum imports by Australia were estimated around 198K dollars. Other major sorghum exporters to Australia were China, Kenya, South Korea and India.
Currently, the global sorghum export market is dominated by the United States which is the leading sorghum exporter worldwide. As per the import export data reports, the US sorghum exports shipments were estimated around 4699 million metric tonnes during FY 2022.
Whereas Argentina was the second biggest sorghum exporter with shipments worth around 2500 million metric tonnes. After Australia, Kenya and India are other major sorghum exporters.
According to the India export data, around 50 million metric tons worth sorghum export shipments were made during the financial year 2022. Whereas Kenya accounted for over 50 million metric tons export shipments.

Sugar, Canola, Wheat, Rice, Beef, Mutton, Fruits & Nuts, Pigs, Dairy and Fishery products are the major agri exports of Australia. Over the years, Australian exports to Asian countries have risen. China has emerged as the biggest importer of Australian goods followed by Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, India and South Korea.
