Turkey to seek $15B textile exports

 Being the world's 5th largest textile exporter, Turkey is expecting positive growth for the financial year 2023. There was a minor increase in Turkey's textiles exports this year.

According to the Turkey customs data reports, around 12.9 billion dollars exports were recorded for Turkey this year. Compared to last year, it was just 0.6% more.


Textiles is the 3rd largest exported commodity from Turkey. Turkey’s textiles exports remained stable throughout the year. The Turkish government is aiming for 15 billion dollars textile exports by 2023.


Turkey export data suggests that the major buyers of Turkish textiles were mainly European and African countries. In 2022, Turkey exported over 5.5 billion dollars to leading European destinations. There was a shortfall of 5% in comparison to FY 2021.


As per our Turkey import export data, there was an increase of 7% in Turkish textile exports to African countries. Turkey's exports to African nations totaled 1.4 billion dollars. Recent earthquake has affected Turkey's textile production.


As it hit across textile production reach areas. Due to which, the textile exports of Turkey were affected. According to the latest Turkey Exim reports, Turkish textiles exports declined by 9% during February 2023 as compared to January 2023.


Textile exports to European countries fell by 26% as compared to February 2022. European countries imported over 790 million dollars worth of textiles in February 2023. On the other hand, textiles exports to Africa reduced to 19% in February 2023. Textile exports from Africa were valued around 191 million dollars.


Italy is the third most favoured destination for Turkey's textiles imports. Italy had over 7.5% share of total textile exports. Whereas, Italy's textiles and raw materials imports decreased significantly and recorded to be 215 thousand tonnes in FY 2022.


Germany and the United States were 3rd & 4th top destinations for Turkey's textiles imports.  Turkey's textiles exports to Germany declined to 182 thousand tonnes while USA's textiles exports increased by 7% with over 166 thousand tonnes shipments. Textiles exports to Iran rose by 30% with over 94 thousand tonnes worth exports. Whereas exports to the UK decreased by 21%.


In terms of apparel exports, Turkey made significant improvements..In 2022, Turkey's apparel exports were estimated around 19 billion dollars. It was 6% more as compared to 18 billion dollars in FY 2021.


Knitted and Crocheted clothing items accounted for 11 billion dollars in 2022 with 2% growth in exports. Whereas non-knitted apparel valued around 8 billion dollars during FY 2022. There was around 12% increase in non knitted apparel exports from Turkey as compared to 7.5 billion dollars in 2021.


On the other hand, Turkey's imports of cotton yarn and cotton textiles had seen a sharp rise of 30% as compared to 2021. According to the Turkey import data, around 4 billion dollars worth textiles were imported by Turkey during FY 2022.
