Tanzania reduces its onion exports to Kenya
Onions are the major export products of Tanzania. Tanzania does a significant amount of onion exports to its neighbouring countries like Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, etc. According to the Tanzania customs data reports, around 29 million worth onion exports shipments were recorded in the financial year 2021.
As compared to the last year Tanzania import export data of 2020, there was an increase of 35% in overall onion exports shipments of the country. In FY 2021, Tanzania's total onion exports shipments were estimated around 3.5 million dollars. The major contributors to the Tanzania onion exports were Uganda, Burundi, Comoros, Kenya, DR Congo, United Kingdom, Botswana, Oman, and Montenegro.
Uganda holds the maximum share of Tanzania's onion exports contributing to over 95% share. The total value for Tanzania's onion exports to Uganda was over 3 million dollars in FY 2021. Uganda was followed by Burundi and Comorous with over 113K dollars and 25K dollars worth of onion imports from Tanzania.
Although the onion exports to Kenya reduced significantly. It is reduced by 48% in 2021 accounting for over 18.4K worth onion import shipments from Tanzania. This resulted in the hike in onion prices of the Kenyan market.
As per the latest market trends report, the onion prices in Kenya soared to KSh 150 per kilo. That is mainly due to imports cuts by Tanzania and less production in the country. Similarly, the prices of carrots, maize, and tomatoes has seen a noticeable increase of 6%.
As per Tanzania export data, the Democratic Republic of Congo was the 5th largest importer of onions with over 3.9 K worth value. For the financial year 2021, Tanzania was ranked 48th leading onion exporter in the world.
On the other hand, Tanzania was ranked 179th leading onion exporter globally. According to the Tanzania import data reports, the import volume for 2021 declined by 79% and the shipments were around 148 K dollars. Tanzania’s total onion imports were recorded to be 625K dollars in 2021.
China, India, Rwanda, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates were among the top exporters of Onion to Tanzania in FY 2021. China covered over 80% share of Tanzania's total imports and accounted for a total 528K dollars worth imports. China was followed by India and Rwanda for 70K and 12K worth export shipments respectively.
In terms of onion exports, Tanzania is facing stiff competition from China, Netherlands and Spain. However, the onion exports of Tanzania are declining in Kenya, France and Malawi. Apart from Tanzania, the major onion import competitors are Indonesia, Vietnam and the United States.
