Turkey is emerging as the major durum wheat export market

Turkey is slowly progressing towards becoming the leading durum wheat exporter. This year, Turkey has a high yield of durum wheat in comparison to the top durum wheat exporter, Canada. Turkey had produced over 4.2 million tonnes of durum wheat in 2023. Turkey's durum wheat exports are progressing at an express rate. It could become a major force in the export market. Turkey does not export any durum wheat globally due to high domestic demand. 

However, the Turkish government is planning to export durum wheat for the first time. According to the Turkey import export data, the shipments were estimated to be 84,000 mt in the last month. Although, there was a rise in durum wheat imports from Kazakhstan and Russia. 


The historical Turkey customs data shows that around $40 thousand worth of durum wheat exported from Turkey in FY 2021. Italy was the top durum wheat importer from Turkey followed by Libya, Morocco, Belgium, Syria, Iraq and Azerbaijan. Cyprus, Spain and Switzerland were other prominent durum wheat importers from Turkey.


On the other hand, Tukey had made a tremendous amount of wheat exports. Turkey export data shows that Turkey's wheat exports figures were totaled to be $1.5 billion dollars. Iraq was the top wheat importer from Turkey with over 40% share in the country's overall wheat imports. After Iraq, Yemen, Syria, Venezuela, Sri Lanka, Somalia, Angola, Palestine and Sierra Leone were among the top Turkey's wheat importers.


In terms of imports, Turkey's wheat imports were totaled to be $28 million dollars during FY 2022. As per Turkey import data, Russia was the top wheat exporter to Turkey having over 80% share. Along with Russia, Yemen, Italy, Ukraine, Iraq, India, Bulgaria, France and Bosnia & Herzegovina were other major wheat exporters to Turkey.


Currently, Canada along with Russia are the leading exporters of durum wheat with exports worth over $1.86 billion last year. Ukraine, Romania, France, Argentina, Australia, Greece,  Latvia and Poland are other major markets for Durum wheat exports. Whereas, the major durum wheat importers were mostly from the African subcontinent.


The global import export data shows that Nigeria is the top importer of durum wheat across the globe. Egypt, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, Morocco and Algeria are among the major buyers of durum wheat in the world.


The demand for durum wheat is quite immense but the supply is low. This is the high time to cash in this opportunity.
