Indonesia is a prominent importer of agricultural products. Indonesia is the world's leading garlic importer. China was the top supplier of garlic to Indonesia accounting for over 98% share. Singapore, France, Russia and Malaysia were other significant garlic suppliers to the global market. 

Andalan Alam Pertiwi, Koperasi Inkoppol and Luthfi Samudera Rezeki were the top Indonesian import companies responsible for the maximum amount of garlic import shipments. Whereas, Indonesia export data reflects that the country's fresh garlic exports were nearly $2.2 million in the fiscal year 2022. Green herbal Indonesia and Bagus Perdana were the leading garlic suppliers from Indonesia responsible for over 56% share of Indonesian garlic exports. 


Indonesia relies on imports to meet rising domestic demand for garlic. So in the wake of that Indonesian government has decided to reduce its garlic imports by 40% and promote domestic production. Although, the government has allowed permits for the imports of over 1 million tons of garlic but in future, they could limit garlic imports. Also, the government has some plans to boost garlic production which includes financial aid to the farmers.


Apart from garlic, Indonesia's major agricultural imports include wheat, soymeal, cotton, sugar and milk powder. These goods covered over 30% of the total Indonesian agricultural imports. According to the Indonesia import data reports, the wheat imports were recorded to be $14 million in FY 2022. India, Turkey, Vietnam and South Korea were the major markets for the wheat imports contributing to over 80% share of Indonesia's overall wheat imports.


On the other hand, Soymeal imports were merely $41 thousand during 2022. Germany was the top soymeal supplier to the global market. Indonesia was responsible for over $982 million worth of cotton shipments in 2022. Brazil, United States, Australia and India were responsible for over 70%. 


Sugar accounted for the high shipment volume with worth around $2.1 billion. Indonesia's sugar imports came from India (36%), Australia (24%), Brazil (23%) and Thailand (16%). Whereas, milk powder imports worth over $789 million during the financial year 2022. The top markets for Indonesia's milk powder imports were New Zealand (37%), United States (24%), Belgium (12%), and Australia (10%).


For the financial year 2022, Indonesia's overall vegetable imports were recorded to be around $890 million. China accounted for 70% of Indonesia's vegetable import shipments. Myanmar, New Zealand, Ethiopia, and India were other major vegetable exporters to Indonesia. Jiangsu Liming Food, Jinxiang Hopelong Shuifa Agriculture and Shandong Goodfarmer International Trading were the top Chinese companies supplying vegetables to Indonesia.
