Kenya eyes US & EU markets for apparel exports

Kenya is an agriculture centric country. Tea and Horticulture are the major exports of Kenya. Whereas, the textile sector is quite neglected. That is why the government is planning for the betterment of its textile sector. Kenya import export data shows that the country's textiles exports were $18 thousand during the financial year 2021 while it came down to $682 in 2022. 

There was a huge decline of 96% last year. Although, their textiles contributed to over9% share in Kenya’s overall exports. Kenya's textiles exports were limited to Rwanda, Tanzania and Burundi. The Kenyan government is targeting the United States and European market. The latest Kenya export data shows that over $548 million worth of clothing and textiles exports have been made during this fiscal year. 


On the other hand, Kenya’s textiles imports recorded to be $2 million in fiscal year 2022. Compared to the previous year, there was an increase of 34%. Kenya import data shows that 80% of the country’s overall textile imports came from China. Whereas, the United Kingdom, India, Turkey, South Africa, United Arab Emirates and Denmark are other significant textiles exporters to Kenya.


Suntan Limited was the top textile buyer company from Kenya accounting for over 45% of the country's total textile imports. Floor Decor Kenya, Atnafu Traders, Yastech Brands, Wickham Bros and Hatupe Enterprises were the top textile importing companies from Kenya.


Apart from textiles, Kenya's other major exports to the United States includes nails, tacks, drawing pins, cannabis, dyes, titanium ores, and radar apparatus. Hela Intimates Epz, Mombasa Apparels, and Royal garment industries are the top suppliers from Kenya to the United States.


Whereas, the EU is the most dominant market for Kenyan goods exports. Eu accounts for over 21% of Kenya's overall exports. The most favoured products bought by the EU from Kenya were mostly tea, coffee, vegetables, fruits, and flowers. Among the EU, the Netherlands was the top importer of Kenyan goods. Germany and France were other major markets for Kenya's exports.


The country is planning to raise its clothing exports to the United States to $1 billion and European Union countries to $2 billion by the end of 2030. In the wake of reviving Kenya’s textile sector, the United States is providing the aid of $55 million. The Kenyan government is devising various strategies to benefit local textile industries, cotton farmers, and put more emphasis on providing jobs.
