Spain's fresh fruits & vegetables exports hit 16.5 Bn Euros in 2023
Spain offers a pleasant climate and diverse variety of fruits and vegetables. Spain's most produced fruits and vegetables items are oranges, avocado, mangoes, figs, persimmon, cantaloupe, nispero fruits, etc. Spain import export data shows that around 16.5 billion euros worth of fruits and vegetables will be exported during 2023.
As compared to fiscal year 2022, Spain’s fruits and vegetables exports dropped by 6%. There was a decline of 11 million tonnes in comparison to FY 2022. The biggest markets for Spanish fruits exports were Germany, United Kingdom, France and Netherlands. Germany was the biggest importer with 28% share in Spain's fruits exports. Along with Germany, the United Kingdom (13%), France (12%), Netherlands (11%), Italy (8%) were other prominent importers of fruits from Spain.
There was some notable amount of shipments across Switzerland, Poland, Portugal, Belgium and Austria respectively. Spain's major fruits exports by volume were orange, mandarin, watermelon, lemon, melon, strawberry, nectarine, peach, table grapes, avocado and apples. Orange export shipments from Spain were around 1.6 million metric tonnes during last year. Mandarin (1.25 MMT), watermelon (680 MT), lemon (648 MT) and strawberry (278 MT) in 2023.
In terms of Spain's oranges exports volume, Germany and France were the two biggest markets for Spain. Spain export data suggest that Spain imported nearly 392,000 thousand and 375,000 thousand respectively during last year. Also, Spain was the biggest mandarin exporter during last year. Spain's majority of the mandarins exports went to Germany, France, United Kingdom, Poland and Italy.
In terms of watermelon exports, Spain was the biggest market last year. Spain customs data shows that the country's watermelon exports hit over $850 million in 2023. The biggest markets for Spain's watermelon exports were Germany, France, United Kingdom, Netherlands, and Portugal. In terms of maximum fruits export shipments, the top fruits export companies from Spain were Consofrut, Exquisite fruits and Anecop.
On the other hand, Spain was the second biggest exporter of vegetables globally. Spain's most exported vegetables were pepper, lettuce, and cucumber. Spain exported nearly 795 thousand tons of vegetables. Whereas, lettuce exports were 715 thousand tons followed by 698 thousand tons of cucumber exports in 2023. Some of the other prominent vegetable exports from Spain were chillies, aubergines (eggplants), celery, tomatoes, and sweet corn.
The biggest markets for Spain's vegetable exports were Germany with $2.23 billion worth. Whereas, France and the United Kingdom reported over $1 billion worth of vegetable imports from Spain in 2023. Frutas Bimar, West Foods, Fresh Box and Anecoop were the biggest vegetable export companies from Spain during 2023.
Whereas, Spain import data shows upward growth with 7% hike in shipments and 18% growth in imports volume. Over 4.5 billion euros worth of fruits and vegetables will be imported by Spain in 2023. Experts see a positive forecast for Spain’s fruits and vegetables exports growth in 2024.
