Germany's Dairy Imports Exports Analysis

Germany is among the world’s leading dairy products importer and exporter globally. For the financial year 2023, Germany was the top importer of milk worldwide. Through this blog, you could get detailed trade information on Germany’s dairy market.

Cheese

According to Germany import export data reports, over $5.9 billion worth of cheese imports were made by Germany during FY 2023. There was a 3.5% increase in Germany’s cheese imports compared to FY 2022. The Netherlands was the top cheese supplier to Germany with around $1.5 billion worth of cheese exports last year.


Germany has shown immense interest in cheese imports from France ($924 Million), Italy ($775 Million), Austria ($525 Million) and Denmark ($440 Million) in 2023.  On the other hand, Germany’s cheese exports hit a record $6.9 billion during the financial year 2023. According to Germany export data reports, Italy was the top cheese importer from Germany with $1.53 billion in 2023.


Along with Italy, the Netherlands, France, Austria, Belgium and Spain were the fastest growing markets for Germany's cheese exports. Ammerland America, Gebrüder WOERLE, and DMK Group were among the fastest growing cheese export companies from Germany.  


Milk

Whereas, Germany's milk exports went up by 7.8% and is estimated to be around $1.7 billion during last year. The Netherlands was the top milk importer from Germany with 24% share of exports. Among the top markets were Italy, China, Belgium, Denmark, France and Poland. 


According to Germany import data, the Czech Republic accounted for 20% of Germany's overall milk imports. In terms of Germany's milk import share, Austria (16%), Poland (15%), Belgium (13%), Netherlands (13%) and Denmark (9%) were most favoured destinations. The leading Germany's milk export companies were  Arla Foods Amba, Frischli Milchwerke and Sachsenmilch Leppersdorf.


Honey

In 2023, Germany's honey imports and exports reduced by 7% and 30% respectively. As per Germany customs data, $118 billion worth of honey was exported by Germany during last year. Switzerlands was the top market for Germany's honey exports with 14% market share. Along with Switzerland, France, Austria, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia and Belgium were other major destinations for natural honey exports from Germany. 


On the other hand, Germany's honey imports were $221 million in 2023. Ukraine was the top honey supplier to Germany having 13% market share. Also, there was a notable amount of honey export shipments  from Argentina, New Zealand, Mexico and Hungary. Schutte Honey and Fürsten-reform were the leading honey export companies from Germany with a notable amount of shipments in 2023.


Egg

In 2023, Germany's eggs exports surged to 7% with worth around $338 million. In which, 50% of Germany's eggs exports came from the Netherlands with worth over $172 million in 2023. The fastest growing markets for Germany's eggs exports were Russia, Denmark, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland. 


On the other hand, there was a 21% rise in the eggs demand in 2023. Germany imported over $845 million worth of eggs last year. The Netherlands was the leading supplier of eggs to Germany with 72% market share followed by Poland, Denmark, Belgium and Romania. Valo Biomedia, Moorgut Kartzfehn Turkey Breeder and Wimex Agrarproukte were the leading egg export companies from Germany.


Meat

In 2022, Germany's meat exports were $7.9 billion while it rose to $8.2 billion in 2023. Italy and the Netherlands were among the leading meat exporting markets with $1.3 Billion and $1.2 Billion in 2023. Whereas, Austria, Poland and France were other major markets for Germany's meat exports. 


On the other hand, the country's meat imports were recorded to be $8.3 billion during FY 2023. In terms of import share, the Netherlands (20%), Poland (15%), Belgium (10%) and Denmark (8%) were the top destinations for Germany's meat imports last year. Westfleisch, Vion Food International and Tonnies Lebensmittel were the leading meat import companies from Germany.
