Italy's food and beverages market


 Italy is famous for its scenic beauty, wine and cuisine. Be it pasta or pizza, Italian cuisine is loved by everyone. Italy's foods and beverages exports saw significant growth last year. According to Italy import export data reports, Italy's food exports rose to 8% with an estimated value of around 36 billion euros in 2023. These include Italian wine, fresh fruits, vegetables, pasta, cheese, meat and olive oil.

The top markets for Italian food and beverages exports were France, Germany, United Kingdom, and the United States. Italy export data shows 13% food exports to France followed by Germany (12%), United Kingdom (11%). There was a decline of 2.5% in Italy's food exports to the United States. Caseificio Ghidetti, Pasta Zara and Pastificio Attilio Mastromauro were the top food and beverages export companies. 


In 2023, Italy's fresh fruits exports rose up to 9% with a record value of $4 billion. Among the top fruits exports of Italy were apples, grapes, apricots, melons, bananas, dried fruits, etc. Germany was the leading fresh fruits importer from Italy with $1.2 billion worth of fresh fruits imports in 2023. Along with Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, United Kingdom and Belgium were top fresh fruits importers from Italy.


Italy's fresh vegetables exports were recorded to be $1.9 billion during last year. Italy's fresh vegetables include lettuce, cabbages, cauliflowers, tomatoes, carrots, onions, vegetables, potatoes, legumes, etc. Spain was the top importer of vegetables from Italy with 20% market share followed by Netherlands (12%), France (11.5%), Germany (6%) and China (4.5%). Fruttaviva, Vita Fruit, Consorfrut and Fructus Meran were the leading fruits & vegetables export companies from Italy last year. 


Cheese was the most exported item from Italy with worth around $4.5 billion in 2023. Italy's cheese exports sales went up by 6.5% as compared to fiscal year 2022. France was the leading cheese importer from Italy with 20% market share. Germany, United States, United Kingdom, Spain and Belgium were other prominent markets for Italy's cheese exports. 


Whereas, Italy's pasta exports saw 15% rise worth around $4.2 billion during fiscal year 2023. The United States and Germany were the leading markets for Italy's pasta exports last year. Among the fastest growing markets for Italy's pasta exports were France, United Kingdom, Spain, Netherlands and Belgium. On the other hand, Italy's meat exports were $2.8 billion for the financial year 2023. 


Germany ($450 Mn), France ($440 Mn) and the United States ($188 Mn) were the leading meat importing countries from Italy. Whereas, Italian liquor exports were estimated to be $12 billion during the financial year 2023. Davide Campari, Casa Vincola Caldirola and Donelli Vini were the fine Italian wine export companies with maximum number of shipments last year. 


Olive oil is another major export from Italy. Italy was the second leading olive oil exporter globally. In 2023, Italy's olive oil exports  went up by 6% with worth around $1.8 billion. The United States accounted for Italy's 30% of olive oil exports followed by Germany (11%), France (7.8%), Japan (5.7%) and Canada (5.2%).
