Spain, Europe's leading pork exporter to China

Spain is a very niche market for pork exports. Among the European nations, Spain is the world's leading exporter of pork. China was the biggest market for Spain's pork exports. Spain represents 17.5% share of the global pork exports.

As per Spain import export data, the pork exports of the country accounted for $6.5 billion during fiscal year 2023. Pork represents 60% share of Spain's overall meat exports. Compared to $5.6 billion exports in 2022, there was a significant increase of 14% this year.


Italy, China and France were the biggest destinations for Spain's pork exports representing 32% market share. According to Spain export data, Italy’s pork imports from Spain accounted for $761 million followed by China ($735 million) and France ($710 million).


Among the fastest growing markets for Spain's ports exports were Japan, Poland, Romania, Korea and Portugal.  The leading Spanish pork export companies shipment wise were Pere Porxas Pairó, Rivasam Intercontinental, and Boadas 1880.


On the other hand, overall meat exports from Spain were estimated to be $11 billion during fiscal year 2023 with 11% increase compared to FY 2022. Meat products represent 2.8% share of Spain’s total exports. Apart from pork, bovine meat was the most exported item from Spain worth $1.5 billion last year. 


Whereas sheep meat exports were $280 billion. The leading market for Spanish meat exports were France ($1.5 billion), China ($1.3 billion), Italy ($1.2 billion) and Portugal ($1 billion). Also, there was a frequent rise in Spain’s pork exports to Japan, Poland and South Korea.


Whereas per Spain import data, the overall pork imports stood at around $285 million in the past fiscal year. There was a 15% rise in Spain's pork imports compared to previous year. France was the most favoured destination by Spain for pork imports, having 22% share.


Also, there was a rise in Spain's pork imports from Germany (19.6%), Portugal (14%), Denmark (10%) and the Netherlands (9.5%).  Manet Import, Jochefish, Inlet Seafish and Grenoucerie were the top Spanish companies by imports. 

When it comes to overall meat items imports of Spain, the total value was estimated to be $2.1 billion during FY 2023. These were bovine meat ($781 million), sheep meat ($55 million) and other ($15 million).  The Netherlands was the biggest meat supplier to Spain with supplies worth $420 million. The other significant markets for Spain's meat exports were Poland, Germany, France, and Brazil.


The Spanish meat market is expected to expand up to $8.6 billion in this financial year. Spanish companies which are involved in meat production and its exports/imports can expand their reach further through global import export data provider.
